Arc Flash
One hazard that has become a problem for some is arc flash. This type of hazard isn't something that people assume will happen, but there's no telling when such will take place. It is also known as a flashover (not to be confused with an arc blast).
NFPA 70E
Because of tendencies of an arc flash, NFPA 70E was implemented:
- Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace was made because of the cases of injuries and deaths from arc flash.
- NFPA 70E has become mandatory on the workplace in different areas in the country.
- It is defined as the use of Personal Protective Equipment or PPC.
- It requires Arc Rated and flame resistant clothing that limits the use of cotton and other types of clothing that is unsafe while working in conditions concerning electricity.
The type of clothing
Clothes that are made from cotton can start a fire caused by an internal or external heat source like an arc flash. The after-burn can cause a more severe injury. Polyester apparel will contribute to a more complex injury because the material will burn and then make contact with the skin, and into the wounds. Hence, the use of a flame resistant clothing, that was tested against the 1959 ATSM standard, was implemented.

It's a good thing that apparel manufacturers have designed a clothing that not only has flame resistant features, but also has moisture-reducing, body-cooling and odor-fighting properties.
